What's New?

Here’s a summary of what’s changed and what’s new:

The biggest change is that we’ve moved some things around on the site, based on feedback we got from teachers and students.

Units: The unit home page for each unit has a link to the unit plans for educators. We’ll also be adding virtual field trips and primary source sets to the home pages in the coming months. The goal is to bring everything relevant to each unit on its home page so it’s easier to find material by topic.

Library: The library of materials is now located on the student side of the site, and within the library we’ve created several new features to help you locate the material you need more quickly.

  • Primary Sources contains all primary sources used on the site, including photographs & prints, maps & charts, documents, audiovisual clips, and objects
  • Explainer Videos get their own page! So do biographies.
  • The infographics that appear on the Learn It! pages will be pulled together in their own section to make them easier to locate. You won’t need to remember where you saw them within the unit! This feature will become available within the next few weeks.
  • All the activities from the units are also pulled together in one place, allowing you to sort by unit or by type of activity (vocabulary, brainstorming, writing, drawing, etc.).
  • The section on graphic organizers is new and presents a series of templates that can be adapted to any content. These tools really help students process what they’re learning!
  • The book lists offer a comprehensive list of books used in the Moose (because literature is important to learn!). A second book list shares children’s books written about New Hampshire specifically, with New Hampshire-based authors noted.

Most of the changes we made to the Moose are on the Educator side of the site, where we added a number of new resources for teachers.

New sections focus on teaching social studies and literacy.

  • The social studies section offers a rationale for why social studies is important and what high-quality social studies programs should include. Information about important historical thinking skills and research skills are offered as well.
  • The literacy section highlights the connection between reading and writing proficiency and social studies, emphasizing the importance of cultivating background knowledge and using content-based materials. The Moose is now aligned with the national literacy program Amplify, which many NH schools have already adopted. This section on teaching literacy has a link to the alignment materials, including dozens of lesson plans.

Note that the section about working with primary sources, which we called Analyze It!, has now been moved to the Educator side of the site, where it can be found in the new section on teaching social studies. The section has been renamed "using Primary Sources."

The other two sections on this side of the side—Resources and Using the Moose—present materials that are probably already familiar to you, including projects, primary source sets, virtual field trips, the giant NH map, the curriculum paths, and information about academic standards.

We’ll continue to update the site to reflect this new organization in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for more!
